Although they were allies during WWII, the United States and the Soviet Union, fueled by their fundamental ideological differences, embarked on what would be called the Cold War starting in the post-WWII era. As both sides would eventually have nuclear and atomic bomb technology which potentially spelled the end of the world if used, both sides instead largely used propaganda to win the Cold War. The propaganda was both official (i.e. issued by the government) and unofficial, and was designed to make its own side look good while making the other side look bad. The propaganda was aimed to its own citizens, to the other side and to others around the world, who were often looking to the two superpowers for support. One problem often was that the propaganda had to match the reality that people saw and faced on the ground.

Back in 1980, a teenage Steve Cram was part of a team of British athletes who defied their government to go behind the iron curtain and compete in the Olympic Games. Steve Cram returns to the Russian capital to relive the story of the most controversial Olympics of modern times. An Olympics boycotted by the United States because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and blighted by allegations of cheating and state sponsored doping. But these were also the games of Daley Thompson, Duncan Goodhew, Alan Wells and the incredible rivalry between Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett. It's a fascinating story in which we hear how the games that threatened the very existence of the Olympic movement actually changed it for the better and, decades later, provided an unexpected bonus for the whole of British sport.

'Nuclear Sharks' explores the silent, stealthy symbol of the Cold War. A war waged outside public view. A war about strategy and world domination.
